So I posted about how I was so sick on the plane ride to Hawaii a few weeks ago. I thought maybe it was food poisoning but wasn't sure. Well, unfortunately for me, I found out what made me sick when we were in Laguna Beach last week.
I went to Costco and noticed they had the 64 oz. bottles of Naked Juice which are so good. I had had a bottle of Green Machine with my lunch the morning we got on the plane. So I was so excited to have some after my morning run. Well I did and it tasted just as good as I remembered. But about an hour later my stomach started to hurt and I was feeling so nauseous (sounds familiar...). Sure enough I started throwing up again and continued throwing up for about 3 hours or so. It was a good thing the sun didn't really come out at the beach that day because I was stuck in bed sick as a dog.
Apparently something in the Naked Green Machine Juice does not agree well with my stomach. So here are the ingredients:
2 3/4 apples
1/2 banana
1/3 kiwi
1/3 mango
a hint of pineapple
spirulina
chlorella
broccoli
spinach
blue green algae
garlic
barley grass
wheat grass
ginger
parsley
I'm doubtful that it's any of the fruits or vegetables that would cause a problem. And I'm not sure what spirulina or chlorella even are??
Needless to say, I will not be drinking any more Naked Juice anytime soon.

Hi there...did you ever figure out what it was the caused the sickness? I had the exact same thing happen to me after drinking a Naked Green Machine. It was basically like food poisoning and crazy vomiting and diahrrea. Awful. I did some research and I did see that Chlorella can make people sick. But I have had it/drank this juice many times before. Could it be that your body reacts differently at different times?
I can tell you that I don't think that it's the brand itself but just simply the flavor Green Machine Naked Juice. I know because I have had the same reaction you had to drinking it. I drink Naked Juice all the time but not usually in the Green Machine flavor. Both of times I drunk that flavor I threw up a few hours later.
So did I just now drinking Green Machine. I'm so ready to be done with the Naked juices now. :-(
I know how you were feeling, I bought the same brand and same drink Green Machine at the store just to have something to drink in the morning while i finished my running around. by the time i got home i started getting hot flashes and upset stomach then i did end up getting very sick with vomiting and diarrhea. I did not think much of it maybe it was expired. Today I bought the same drink again from a Hospital cafeteria and with in 2 hours I was driving home and started to get sweaty and stomach cramping again. I finally had to pull over 3 times to get sick. I do not have allergies and I am a vegetarian and eat healthy. I will now stop buying this product. It is scary that there maybe something in the drink made me that ill and also others that have drank this product.
I drank Green Machine one morning after getting to work. October 16, 2013. about an hour after I started feeling sick. i had to be taken from work to the hospital via ambulance where i spent 6 hours in the emergency room because they could not get the vomiting or diahrrea to stop. 4 days later i still could not eat anything but saltine crackers.
I was crazy thirsty after teaching a class, I came home home and drank the green machine and within hours I was throwing up like crazy. It was awful, I drank 2 huge glasses and I regret it. The drink was not expired. It's been a couple of days now, but my stomach has not been the same. No more naked juice for me.
Same thing with me. I bought some Naked Juice Green Machine on the way to work the small one with 2 servings. About lunch time I was feeling really nauseous. But I didn't want to leave work. Just puked in the trash can. I feel a little better but I think I need to go home in case I get sick again. No more Naked Juice or green juices for me. I only drank half which was 1 serving. And the expiration date is a month and a half away.
It was either the chlorella or the spirulina. Both can cause GI distress or vomiting.
So sick after drinking this. Went to hot yoga thought I might die ... Vomiting was the only solution. Feeling a little better and able to drink water after many hours.
My son has had this drink twice and both times vomited repeatedly. I found this blog by googling green machine and vomit.
Today was my 2nd time drinking the green machine and the results were the same. I was sitting in my truck throwing up in a plastic bag. My stomach felt like it would explode. It was the longest drive home. I was vomiting violently for over 2 hours

Last week I had Naked Green Machine with my breakfast at work. Around noon I began to feel nauseous and shortly after, the vomiting began. I just assumed that it was just a stomach virus. However, had another Naked Green Machine and the same thing happened but 10x's worst. I had the diarrhea and sweating along with the other previous symptoms. I had to leave work because not only were the symptoms uncontrollable but the pain was unbearable.

This same thing happened to me. Thought maybe it was a bad batch, but the last one I had was over 6 weeks ago. I had drank the green machine one at least 20 times before, at times on a daily basis. Glad I found this blog. I was about to call the hospital cafeteria and tell them to pull these off the shelves.
Same thing with me. At work had at lunch. After a few hours I was vomiting and an hour later had diarrhea. I hardly ever regurgitate. Maybe twice as an adult once after taking meds pre surgery on an empty stomach and today after that damn green machine. No more for me.
Same with me! Today I spent 3 hours in the emergency room on a IV after throwing up and having diarrhea. This should be taken off the shelves. I think my hospital bill should be paid for too!

I experienced the same thing bad stomach cramping nausea vomiting light headed. Sent me to the ER twice in two weeks before I figured it out.
I've experienced nausea light headed stomach cramping and vomiting. I do not have a weak stomach and no known allergies. This has happened twice and each time after drinking a green machine. My husband made the connection and then I googled and found this blog. I've used this product before and never experienced these symptoms. No more green machine for me!!! The company needs to be made aware of this.
Wow! This makes so much sense now, I just threw up and was incredibly nauseaous couple of hours after a green machine naked juice! Come to think of it, this is the second time! But what is the cause?
I am shocked - I have gotten sick twice now from the Green Machine. I thought is was because of something else I ate the day I got sick the first time. Now I know exactly what caused me to get sick both times, similar symptoms as everyone else on this blog and thankful the second time isn't as bad as the first! Whoooa - I don't wish this on anyone, but happy to know that I am not alone and that I am not overreacting. Thank you all for sharing your stories. PepsiCo lost a customer today for life.
Same here. First time blamed the chicken salad but today there was a common denominator. You can guess what!! Surprised it is allowed on the shelves when it can do that to you!!
Well, add me to the list. I was throwing up last Monday Abe again last night. The only commonality is the Green Machines. I've had them before with no issues but it's been a few years. Last night was particularly awful And a debate of going to the ER bc the vomiting wouldn't stop.no more for me.
It's the SPIRULINA!!!!! I would bet a million bucks that each of you have vomited from the spirulina in the juice. My daughter has ingested spirulina 3 times in her life. Each time, 2 hours later, she vomits profusely for hours and has diarrhea. The first time we mixed spirulina with juice and gave it to her. After the outcome we vowed never to give her spirulina again. Several months later, she accidentally drank some of the Green Machine Naked Juice. Boom. Started vomiting 2 hours later like clockwork. The third time she consumed some kids fruit snacks while at her grandparents. We couldn't believe it when we checked the box, and spirulina was listed as an ingredient.
I have researched and researched, but there's nothing that discusses an allergy to spirulina. But this definitely is. I did read that the type of algae spirulina is, closely mimics that of a bad bacteria that the body tries to fight. Which is why it causes terrible vomiting. Hope this helps someone!!!

This just happened to me. High fever, nausea, diarrhea stomach cramp. It was horrible. Could it be that the juice was not refrigerated properly before I bought it? Perhaps it was left outside exposed to the sun too long. Never again going to buy this Naked Green Machine Juice at Costco.
It is definitely the spirulina. Apparently Spirulina, if not extrwcted properly, can have bad bacteria in it causing vomiting and diarrhea. I have tried both the Protein & Greens and the Green Machine version. Both have Spirulina. However, I have tried their original protein juice (the white one) and have never had any problems. I believe they need to lay off the spirulina in the green juices, it is causing problems. It may even cause another lawsuit.
Jesse, have you noticed all the new products they are putting spirulina in?!? They are starting to use it as a "natural" coloring agent in processed foods. Betty Crocker and Trader Joe's brands to name a few. I'm shocked by how common it's becoming. We have tried various brands and all of them have caused profuse vomiting... How do we stop this?? It seems no one realizes this is a huge problem... for companies AND consumers. There's no research on it. No safety regulations in place. I'm wondering if contacting the company would do anything?
Same thing happened to me after drinking Suja Noon Greens, twice. At first I thought I had a sever case of the stomach flu, but the second time I linked the symptoms to the juice. I don't know what in it made me sick, but I suspect Chlorella and/or Spirulina.
I just panicked because about and hour and a half after drinking the Green Machine drink I felt light headed and nauseous. A little while later the dry heaves, then cramping and lastly diarrhea. Wow what a weird feeling.

I noticed this drink has 'Natural Flavors' in it and when writing that I feel the hot-wave hit hard once again.... I looked up this play on words and the truth behind it and got a rather offputting post back.... worth looking this up? yes. (re-reading before posting gave me the same feeling).
After having a swig or two of the Green Machine, within 5-10 minutes I felt this wave of hot-flashy-ness and a slight clammy saliva formed toward the back of my throat. I turned at my desk and knocked over the drink accidentally (which only happens for things I am not meant to drink)
Feeling into my balance in a relaxed way I noticed my face/head going into a sort of spiral motion forward.
I did some inner-fire breathing to re-correct it, after a few minutes it did so, but i continued feeling the pull toward the face-forward-spiral... I'll comment back if puking is involved, though It most likely will just pass through me.
It may be worth noting that the company is based in California and its not pointed to where they source their algae - if its anywhere off the coast toward Fukushima, its life cycle will have encountered MANY radioactive particles - which
- easy to find information - the japan powerplant hit by the earthquake/tsunami in feb/march 2011, continued leaking radioactive particles into the sea, which is why the weather band has changed significantly since then.
interesting timing that in aug 2012 Brian got sick, and since then over 30 people have commented here claiming sickness. I bet you could multiply that number by 100-1000 (at least!) and count for those that have not used the internet to find this post, that also got sick.
Second time have a naked green machine. First time was the regular size bottle and i had violent vomiting and diarrhea. Thought well couldn’t happen twice in a life time right? WRONG. Drank the half bottle size today at lunch and 40 mins later im looking at my lunch and pissin out my ass. Its the spiralina yall. Will not be trying this a third time. Turned me into a human faucet :(
Ditto! And Oliver, funny you mention this timing on the Chlorella and Spirulina. Back in 2011, I was taking these both as a supplement for skin and to help with slowing of grey hairs and for perspiration. Never had an issue, and wham...a couple years later when I start up the supplements again I am in the middle of a haircut and had to leave because I broke out in a cold sweat and thought I would vomit all over her station. Since then, including one incident with a Naked Green Machine Juice I have had this reaction and then looked at the ingredients and noticed that it either had one or both of the ingredients! WTF! This needs to be banned from being used in foods or at least post something bigger on the front of the packaging that C or S may have been used! It is so violent and comes on quick, it is unfair for these companies to not give any warning! I used to take these years ago, so does not seem like it should be an allergy, but that is what I call it now for lack of a better explanation. But seems like these types of algae are too contaminated to be used from certain areas, or they are not being handled safely? Nonetheless, something needs to be done!
The areas they draw their sources of both spirulina/chlorella from, should be tested yearly, legitimately, by a trusted non-bribable & non-discrete source. Meanwhile you can get these ingredients from trusted sources easily enough.
Might as well my story. Last Wednesday, I drank it in the morning and by 11, nausea, lightheadedness, by noon, diarrhea for hours, had to leave work. I thought it was my fish oil- same symptoms, so I stopped that.
Today, I got it again, different store, same thing, 11, stomach issues, 12, I just vomited 3 times, sweats, ready to go have diarrhea.
I am sitting on the toilet as I type this, after having vomitted 3 times and having diarrhea after drinking this stuff. I purchased the large sized bottle and tried a few sips of it when i initoally brought it home. I felt a little nauseous, but assumed that it was because of something I ate earlier that was mixing with juice and thought maybe they just weren't agreeing with one another. I had soke.stomach cramps and had a "soft" bowel movement that day, but didn't think anything of it. Fastforward to late last night, and I had Full glass of this stuff, and I have never been more sick in my life. Im more sick now than I have ever been when I actually have an illness, like the 24 hour bug or virus. I have vomited so much I literally began praying to Jesus to not let me vomit anymore and to just let it pass through my bowels. I guess he heard my prayers because I am still sitting on the toilet with actual liquid leaving the part of my body intended for solid waste.
I will NEVER drink this stuff again and am thinking about sending it to a lab to have it tested for contamination or bacterial overgrowth or something, especially since the expiration date isn't even until over a month from now!
Stumbled across your post, because it's 5am and running to the bathroom every few minutes...after having a bottle of Green Machine last night. The thing is...I've had it many times.
I think it has nothing to do with the ingredients, but everything to do with drinking a bad batch. They're using plenty of produce and perhaps every so often some of it is tainted with E. coli. Next time, save the bottle with the residue or juice left in it and call the FDA. I think that's what I'll be doing when the sun comes up.
Had a Green Machine drink yesterday and never been as sick in my whole life after 3 hours .Read all other comments and now sure it was this awful drink.
4/11/2020. - It’s 2:30 Am , currently sitting in the bathroom as I type this. I tried the small version of the green machine the day Before yesterday and thought this tastes really good for a green juice! And so yesterday I went and bought the big version of it and brought it home . At a round six I had another full glass of it before dinner . My husband was making burgers at around 7-8 pm so when it was time to eat I started feeling very nauseous and only took 2 bites of my burger. Then my stomach started getting a sharp pain and said ok maybe I’m just not feeling the burgers . Fast forward to now I’m still nauseous, my stomach pain is still lingering so bad my body is covered in goosebumps , and I’ve had diarrhea twice already . Reading all the previous comments seems it’s clear it was the green machine juice . And once I get up off the toilet I will be grabbing the bottle and chunking it out the door! Never touching that shit again 😖
After reading all the comments, I'm positive this is why I'm in the bathroom now! I thought it might have been the Taco Bell I ate earlier, but I'm having the same symptoms as everyone else (except the nausea, thank goodness!)
Same thing is happening to me now. I’ve drank other naked drinks before with no problem but yesterday was my first time trying the green machine after a friend of mine offered it to me. I drank half the bottle and my son drank the other half. My mom also had a bottle that she drank. A few hours later when I was heading to bed, I started feeling very nauseous and having a lot stomach pain and cramping all night. I absolutely hate throwing up so I kept trying very hard to hold it down, which I was able to. But by morning, I was now having diarrhea. My mom had no problems with this drink. And I checked with my son if he was having any problems since he drank from the same bottle as me, but nope he was completely fine. My body must just be sensitive to something in this drink. I am never drinking it again.
I got very sick after drinking Blue Machine flavor. Vomiting, diarrhea, dizzy. Ended up in er.
It is spirulina! I've experienced the exact same thing and it is never mentioned on the spirulina site.
